Beauty is definitely more than skin deep. It is an alarming thought that, on average; women in Britain are apparently ‘hosting’ 515 cosmetic chemicals a day!
Your skin is the largest organ of your body - fact! The average person’s skin covers an area of 2 square meters, and it accounts for 15% of your body weight. It’s time to really start looking after this covering that protects our insides.
The skin is composed of several layers – the epidermis, the dermis (where the blood vessels, hair follicles and sweat glands are) and a deeper level called the hypodermis. It’s a permeable surface, meaning that oil-based products that you choose to apply to your skin get absorbed deep inside the dermis and epidermis, which in turn can pass into the bloodstream (in small quantities).
Many of the 25,000 chemicals used in mainstream skincare brands have not been tested for long-term toxic effects. The fact is, no one really knows how certain chemicals affect us over time, or how they react in our bodies in combination with the other daily products we are using. That’s why it’s time to choose organic!
What does organic actually mean?
Organic beauty is about using products that are made from organic ingredients that haven’t been sprayed with agricultural chemicals and herbicides.
What’s the difference between natural and organic?
Although the term natural is used widely within cosmetics and beauty – it’s not a verified term – but, it generally means made with products direct from the earth – little processing and not much added!
Organic ingredients are often natural ingredients too. Meaning they are from the earth and have not been sprayed with any pesticides. The Soil Association is the governing body for Organic based products and will certify certain skin care products as organic. They do allow certain preservatives to be used in a certified organic product that are not 100% natural.
Which products are most worthwhile switching to organic and natural?
When it comes to making the switch to organic or natural products the best place to start is with the ‘leave-on’ products, like toners, moisturisers and serums. These get absorbed into your skin and stay there all day. Next, it would be worth swapping your ‘wash-off’ products, such as cleansers, exfoliants and face masks – more temporary but still they have an effect on the skin and certain ingredients get absorbed.
How to go green with your skincare and choose products that are kind to your skin
1 - When choosing your skincare products, be sure to check which accreditations that the brand has -like the “jumping bunny” accreditation – which all of our CAHAYA skin care products carry. Meaning they are never tested on animals.
