period skincare

… intimately connected.

Your monthly cycle and your skin are

… intimately connected.

Believe us, we know. Our sister brand is called LUX (www.luxstore.net) and we are purveyors of organic period products.

It would be unsurprising to wonder what connection a natural skincare could have to period health.

Over the past fifteen months of running our sister brand and we have concluded that the connection between the phase we are in our period cycle and the changes our skin goes through are both connected.

We will keep blogging about this and sharing with you the research we have come across, as well as skin stories, but here are the basics as we understand it and its really worth scrutinising your periods in the context of skincare.

Phases of our periods

Needless to say, this doesn’t apply 100% to all women, but a significant number of us have these experiences.

Periods normally arrive with roughly a 28-40 days synchronicity, with 30 days being the average.

Phase 1: We have all likely noticed the changes in to our skin each month, starting with the ominous pimples just prior to our periods starting.

At this stage of the cycle, also called the Pre-menstrual stage you may observe that your skin is usually dry and pimples start to appear.

Phase 2: Once our periods have graced us, our skin plumps up again and our skin starts to appear healthier.

Phase 3: Along the middle of our cycles, when we ovulate, skin tends to be its glowing best.

Phase 4: Once ovulation has occurred, oiliness may appear and pimples may start to surface.

All of this then cycles back to premenstrual skin and Phase 1.

How our hormones react

Our skin is effectively reacting to the effects of our three sex hormones, namely oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone.

Oestrogen increases in the first half of the cycle, keeping our skin glowing, the dermal water levels high and pores clean.

With the waning of Ostrogen and augmentation of Progesterone, there is more oil(sebum) produced in the lower layers of skin which leads to pores clogging

And finally, with the waning of both oestrogen and progesterone, testosterone becomes a more dominant force causing your skin to dry out.

This cycle of hormonal waxing and waning is designed to support women’s ability to get pregnant with each cycle of their period. However as we have now explained you will find that this has a direct impact on women’s skin too.

Our mission for creating natural organic skincare, is two fold.

Our mission for creating natural organic skincare, is two fold.

Primarily we wanted to create a product free of plastics and any nasties.

And secondly, our goal is to enable your skin as it transitions through its various phases of hormonal change. Our objective is to have our organic skincare work alongside, seamlessly in tandem with your skin, leaving it naturally glowing.

A more apt description of our journey to Cahaya cannot be penned.

John Lennon sang, Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans. A more apt description of our journey to Cahaya cannot be penned.

Our journey started in 2018, as a company selling organic period products (www.luxstore.net).

So many hundreds of conversations followed about periods and women’s health. Skin and skincare featured almost consistently throughout these conversations.

We heard and learned of the impact of skin Specifically, we kept seeing the correlation between oestrogen (a key female sex hormone) and the state of women’s skin.

Women’s skin, while they menstruate, changes weekly, even daily.

Have you noticed how the same cream works for you on certain days and not on others? Have youconsidered why that may be the case?

For me personally, for a long-time skincare has been such a hit and miss.

Year after year I have walked onto a shop floor of an expensive shop and allowed myself to besweet talked into another sweet-smelling potion with a crazy price tag, all for the promise of glowing dewy skin.

A more apt description of our journey to Cahaya cannot be penned.

And so Cahaya was founded in 2020 - to begin the journey of creating a range of vegan and organic skincare that you always wish you could have. A natural skincare range that takes into account the changes your skin undergoes as you progress through your monthly cycles.

Specifically, we kept seeing the correlation between oestrogen (a key female sex hormone) and the state of women’s skin.

We want natural beauty to be about conversations, about the challenges you face with your skin.

We want you to tell us what you would like to see your products do for you and then createproducts that truly work for you.

We are so glad you found us, do please take a look around and give our natural, organic, veganproducts a try
